An Ultimate Sacrifice

It’s Memorial Day

Reflection

memorialday An Ultimate SacrificeHistory is something many of us take for granted. We live our daily lives without truly understanding the past  that has shaped the present. Disregarding our current state of mind and forgetting how our actions impact, affect and create the future. Many of us never learn from the past because we rarely look into it to know just how deeply it has affected the steps we take now.

Past

My dad served in World War II as an engineer working on planes and fighting jets that were used to protect and attack the other side. He served in the Air National Guard. I would rather say the other side because we are all enemies to someone. We all fight for reasons that are beyond comprehension (watch the movies: ‘Flags of our Fathers’ based on the book of the same title and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ based on the book ‘Gyokusai s?shikikan’).  Like many my age who have detested war or even becoming part of it – I appreciate those, like my father, that have made these sacrifices.

Present

I had rolled around the idea of joining the Army or the Marines in my mid-twenties. If I had made that hard choice to join, I would most likely have been in Iraq in the 90′s or in Afghanistan now. If I had joined, there is a good chance I would have never met my wife. Never enjoyed the time of my son. Never met the good people that I have come to call my colleagues and friends. I would have never started writing poetry and doing shows in the late 1990′s, picked up golf, or started to write this blog.

For whatever reason, I did not make that large sacrifice of dropping my current situation for that of putting on a uniform, picking up a gun and serving my street, neighborhood, state or country. I chose not to make that sacrifice. Someone else made that decision so I would not have to.

However, I could never show the level of gratitude for those who make that CHOICE. No words or actions could express thanks enough for the personal and professional sacrifices they have made and continue to make to protect us from harms way.

When you are on your boat, at the barbecue, a tail-gate or hanging out with your family, friends enjoying the day – remember those who are unable to do the same. Imagine the family moments they miss, the small relaxation they give up and the memories they will never have as a result of their service. Lift your glasses and take a moment to say a prayer. Appreciate them.

They make the hard sacrifices so the rest of us don’t have to

So although it will never be enough, all I can say…

Future

If you have never done so, try looking out for our men and women in uniform this week. Take a moment to stop them, shake a hand and say thank you. Many times that will be something they appreciate.

Side Note: It amazes me how many HR professionals do not understand the resources available to our veterans and current armed services soldiers. If you haven’t done so review the web site for the Department of Veteran Affairs which has some great information and resources for our soldiers.

Friday Thought: Never Give Up

64 Never%20Give%20Up Friday Thought: Never Give UpEvery once in awhile we question who we are. What we say. Take a moment to think before we step inside an office to address a group of individuals that we believe are superior to us.

Regardless of age, work environment, culture or geographical location, we all have this self-conscious feeling. This ubiquitous sensation that goes on in our minds.

For me – I go blank. In the moments before a speaking engagement, talk or workshop that I present, I go blank and sometimes numb in my left leg. Always the left leg.

As I get ready to step up and speak my mind on the topic that I have spent hours and sometimes days to perfect, understand and prepare for…

I go blank!

However, after the first few moments, when I realize that the audience is not there to kill, boo, or destroy every word I am about to say; I gain my footing. I gain back what I had always had before I arrived at the front of that audience… i gain back my ground. I gain back my confidence. I take a deep breathe and go on as easily as I pictured I would in my mind.

“Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”  Benjamin Spock

There are times when, no matter how you feel, battered or bruised your self-esteem may be… you still have to go on with life. You have to keep going and not give up.

tumblr l35s9b0Ym21qzpwi0o1 400 Friday Thought: Never Give UpI always have to question myself afterward for feeling the way I do… Is it the audience that takes my confidence, or is it me? Makes you think about who really holds the power over you.

Have you ever felt this way? Ever felt less than when others try to break your will? When others believe in you and believe you are hot stuff, but you don’t believe it yourself? Share… won’t you!

Self-Motivation in 1 Minute a Day

What is your morning routine?

Is it anything like this little girls 49 Second Affirmation:

When you get up in the morning. Head off to work. When you get home. On the weekends.

What ritual or practice do you initiate every day? Does it even come close to what you saw from a, barely 4 year old, little girl? I bet not!

Who should we motivate?

At conferences, seminars, annual meetings, management and staff development – there are always people, groups and individuals that are brought in to motivate and encourage us with their passion and influence. Sometimes they are successful and other times they are not. Their success or lack of could be because of the culture, the environment, etc.

In daily interactions our routines show how close or far we are in relation to people. We show what motivates us by what we do and how we act.

Every day, maybe subconsciously, we look for others to constantly motivate us and those around us.

Maybe we have it wrong. Maybe we should be our own motivation. Maybe we should be the catalyst to motivate others. Maybe…

It takes a little. It takes a lot. But whatever little or a lot it takes, it starts with the individual.

Little Girl Motivational Creed:

I can do anything good. I like my school. I can do anything. I like my dad. I like my cousins… I like my assets. I like my hair…

I can do anything good.

Power of Daily Affirmations

Can you imagine if we started every day like this? If we had that level of self-motivation this little girl had… could you ever imagine the possibilities? Maybe you can be a motivation for others by just motivating yourself?

What is my starting routine…

I pray… I can do anything

So do you have any routines that get you going and started for the week, the month… for your life?
