“Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions.” ~ Author Unknown
From my experience people don’t like to make decisions for the following reasons:
- They are afraid of taking responsibility for the results or don’t like to be held accountable.
- They have no experience with the choice/decision they are faced with.
- They want to wait to see if others will make the decision for them.
- They are afraid they may fail as a result.
- They are afraid of the success that comes from their decision!
These reasons are all natural and can be expected. This is true. I also know that many employees, even leaders, feel that they only have so much power. I even wrote about it. But in any environment, any team, or within any organization; you will have hard choices to make. You will have to make those choices regardless of your level.
From my experience if you ask a question on who makes the decision and that same question ultimately comes back to you… you’re probably the one who needs to decide!
If there is a decision to be made, and no one will step up… MAKE THE DECISION.
“When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that is in itself a choice.” ~William James
